The Injury and Decision to Stop Drinking
Ben Stokes suffered a hamstring tear during the third Test against New Zealand in December. Changing His Approach to Rehabilitation
Stokes admitted that after his first major injury, he initially struggled with how to cope. After reflecting on his habits, particularly his drinking, he understood that it could have negatively impacted his recovery. This time around, Stokes decided to change his rehabilitation approach, focusing on a more balanced lifestyle. He also recognized that alcohol had been part of the cricket culture, especially in the 90s and 00s, but the sport’s physical demands have since evolved.
Stokes’ New Relationship with Alcohol
Although Stokes has not consumed alcohol since January, he emphasized that he doesn’t plan to give it up entirely. Instead, he has learned to manage his drinking habits. In his younger years, he had an all-or-nothing approach, but now, he can enjoy a social drink in moderation. Stokes’ decision to abstain from alcohol temporarily is part of his larger goal to maintain his body and performance as he continues to recover and play for England.
Committed to Full Recovery and Future Success
Despite recent injury setbacks, including knee surgery in late 2023, Stokes remains determined to return to full fitness. His commitment to a strict rehabilitation program is unwavering, and he has shown no signs of slowing down. Recent training footage shared by Stokes indicates that he is on track for his return. The all-rounder is determined to play a key role in England’s upcoming Test against Zimbabwe. Stokes has expressed his dedication to training and improving his fitness. As long as he can continue to train and perform, he intends to keep playing for England.
