Lees began his professional journey with Leeds United and went on to become a mainstay at Sheffield Wednesday, where he played 274 games in all competitions. After three seasons with Huddersfield, he was released at the end of the last campaign.

His arrival comes at a critical time for Peterborough, as centre-back Sam Hughes recovers from Achilles surgery that could keep him sidelined for up to three months. Lees is expected to provide immediate cover and leadership in defence.

Manager Darren Ferguson welcomed the signing and praised Lees’ impact in training. “Tom is a really good signing for us,” said Ferguson. “We were looking for an experienced defender who can help the group, and he fits that perfectly.” The club has not disclosed the length of Lees’ contract, but his presence is seen as vital to shoring up the back line during the early part of the season.

Lees Adds Leadership and Versatility to Posh Squad

Darren Ferguson noted that Lees’ Championship pedigree and versatility make him an ideal fit for Peterborough’s system. “He has played all of his career at a higher level,” Ferguson explained. “He came in and trained with us, was excellent, and fitted in straight away.”

Lees can play in both a back three or a traditional back four, providing the manager with flexible defensive options. His leadership qualities and professional attitude were highlighted as valuable assets to the squad.

The move also reflects Peterborough’s strategic planning in response to Hughes’ injury. Rather than relying solely on youth or depth players, the club acted decisively to bring in someone who understands the demands of English league football.

Beyond the tactical advantages, Lees is expected to serve as a mentor to younger players in the squad. Ferguson emphasized the importance of having seasoned professionals who lead by example, both in training and on matchdays.

With League One presenting its usual challenges, Peterborough’s defensive stability could be a defining factor in their season. Lees’ addition strengthens their backline at a time when consistency and depth are key. While the club remains tight-lipped on contract details, the focus is clearly on results and resilience. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on how Lees integrates and influences a team aiming for promotion.
