Private Blog Network – Excessive Vaginal Washing Can Trigger Discharge Vaginal discharge is a common issue experienc by many women. Understanding its causes is essential for maintaining vaginal health and preventing more serious problems.

Dr. Leo Simanjuntak, SpOG, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at HKBP Nommensen University in Medan, Indonesia, explained that vaginal discharge can result from three main conditions: bacterial vaginosis (BV), candidiasis, and trichomoniasis, with BV being the most common.

What Is Bacterial Vaginosis?

BV is characteriz by a thin, grayish-white discharge with a distinct fishy odor. Interestingly, BV is not always caus by an external infection but can occur due to changes in the vagina’s normal flora.

According to Dr. Leo, one of the main risk factors for BV is the habit of excessive vaginal washing. This practice can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria, allowing harmful bacteria to thrive.

“The vagina actually has a self-cleaning mechanism, so it doesn’t need to be washed too often,” he explained.

However, there are times when cleansing is necessary, such as after specific medical treatments. “In these cases, it’s best to clean under medical supervision,” added Dr. Leo.
