Lack of Protein Intake Can Hinder Growth and Development

Private Blog Network – A lack of protein intake can hinder the growth and development of children. Dr. Luciana B. Sutanto, a clinical nutrition specialist from the University of Indonesia, stated that insufficient protein consumption can lead to stunted growth and even result in stunting.

“The impact of protein deficiency includes health issues, delayed growth, and stunting,” said Luciana, as reported by ANTARA on Monday.

She also explained that, in addition to affecting physical growth and brain development, protein deficiency can weaken the immune system, making children more susceptible to illnesses.

Therefore, it is crucial for children to receive adequate protein intake, both from animal and plant-based sources.

“For children, the recommended intake of plant-based protein for toddlers is 10 percent of their plate. While for older children, the recommendation is that 35 percent should consist of both animal and plant-based protein,” Luciana added.

Luciana emphasized that the government’s free school lunch program should ensure that children’s nutritional needs.

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency in March 2023. The average daily protein intake in Indonesia is still only 62.3 grams per capita.

For comparison, daily per capita protein consumption in Cambodia is 63.3 grams, Thailand at 66.5 grams, the Philippines at 73.1 grams, Myanmar at 78.3 grams, Malaysia at 89.1 grams, and Vietnam at 94.4 grams.

Local Foods Rich in Animal Protein

Regarding efforts to combat stunting, Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, the Chairman of the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI). Highlighted that consuming locally sourced foods rich in animal protein can prevent stunting and obesity in children.

“Currently, the anti-stunting diet also serves to prevent obesity by providing children with locally sourced foods rich in animal protein. For example, in Lampung, there is plenty of fish available, so children can be given meals that include fish.” Said Dr. Piprim during the National IDAI Symposium in Bandar Lampung last February.

He added that providing children with locally sourced foods rich in animal protein can help prevent both stunting and obesity. Ensuring that their nutritional needs are met in a balanced way.
